Transgender people face many barriers within healthcare, including discrimination, ignorance and fear. The lack of informed care, sensitive language, research, and education prevents access to competent care. This presentation will explore ways to improve transgender health in schools, hospitals, health centers, and social service organizations. There are specific health needs in the transgender male community regarding surgery, hormones, sexual health, screenings, and OB/GYN care. We will cover how to become more sensitive and informed providers and interventions for the many barriers to care the transgender community face.

Psycho-Social Care Planning for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Clients

Our transgender clients frequently bring complex issues to the therapy room. Some of them are the effects of severe stigmatization from even those who are in their closest circle of intimacy, including domestic violence. Others are the effect of overt discrimination from basic service providers, both public and private. Additionally, transgender clients who are new to transitioning, or who have been untutored by caring others, have additional self-care concerns that cis-gendered folks don't even have to think about, including learning new skills for self- expression.

Panel Co-Chairs: James Lopresti, PhD, LMHC, and Arianna Lint with John Chaffin, EdD, John Swan, MS

2:15 - 4:30 PM

Supporting The Families and Significant Others of Transgender Clients

Research has shown that family acceptance is a strong indicator of successful negotiation of the myriad complexities of growing up so different from the social norms. But family acceptance is an ongoing developmental process for parents, spouses and children of transgender loved ones. In this session members of a support group for families will discuss the process of "transitioning" that they have to navigate parallel to the journey of their loved one.
