Chile will soon cover sex change surgeries under its public health plan in order to allow citizens of limited means to “recover their true sexual identity,” Health Minister Jaime Manalich said.
Until now such operations were only offered in private clinics at a cost of $20 000 to $30 000, but will now be performed in public hospitals in the capital Santiago,Concepcion and Valparaiso, he said late on Thursday.
Before the reforms, “a poor person had no possibility of completing the process of femininisation or masculinisation,” Rolando Jimenez, head of the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movilh), told AFP.
The cost will now depend on the patient’s income bracket, with the poorest citizens able to get the operations for free.
The South American country of 17 million people has an estimated transsexual population of 3 000 to 4 000, according to Movilh.
The health ministry enacted other measures to prevent discrimination, ruling that blood banks cannot refuse donors based on sexual orientation and that transsexuals should room with patients of their desired gender in hospitals.
Chile recently passed a law against sexual and religious discrimination, and the legislature is discussing a bill to regulate domestic partnerships, including those between homosexuals.

I will admit, I’ve not heard of Against Me! Though because I’ve never heard of the band, I have no idea how bad it is that I haven’t heard of the band. But very happy for Ms. Grace. I cergnid at a couple of sentences in the article ( plans to begin living as a woman, etc.), but overall I thought it was pretty respectful. Was also glad to see President Obama jump on the bandwagon. First sitting President to openly support same-sex marriage, right? Quite a historic moment. Will be interesting to see what comes of that. I don’t even want to think about North Carolina right now, though. And I think Colorado tabled a bill that would have granted civil unions. Doesn’t near the travesty of the NC amendment, but still sad.
They do beat us at this? So sad a small country like Chile offers there people the proper treatments and we here in the richest and greatest have not. Way to go Chile!
