FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced plans for transgender inclusion in a critical national health survey. Building on commitments from HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, this is an important advancement for transgender people and can help correct the gap in resources for transgender health. The plan includes a clear path by HHS to conduct methodological research and testing on transgender inclusive survey questions to be used in their studies. HHS plans to learn from research experts to determine how to best ask respondents about their gender identity.
Developing these scientifically sound research methods now may lead to the adoption of these standards in the 2013 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The plan bears an enormous potential for informing research in offices within HHS, and other federal population studies like the U.S. Census.
