LA Pride: Transgender Activist Karina Samala Honored by City

Category : News Around The Nation

Transgender Activist Karina SamalaOne of the best aspects about living in the Los Angeles/West Hollywood area is that the political and elected leadership – including LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang and the city councils of LA and WeHo – takes the word “inclusive” seriously and comfortably embraces trans people and concerns.

But the recognition has been earned – thanks to the hard work and leadership of such trans activists such as Karina Samala, who was instrumental in getting the LAPD to change its policies and guidelines after many years of effort. Karina was honored on June 1 by Mayor Villaraigosa and the city of LA at the kick-off of LGBT Heritage Month. Happy Pride – and congratulations Karina!
